Didier Drogba Slams CAF Over Controversial AFCON Title Reversal: “In Europe, You Can Never See Things Like This”

Legendary Ivorian striker and former Chelsea captain Didier Drogba has expressed strong disapproval of the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco.

In a sharp reaction to the controversial ruling, Drogba described the handling of the final as completely unacceptable and damaging to African football.

“It is completely unacceptable that Senegal were handed the trophy and later it was given to Morocco. What level of football is this? Where are we taking African football to?” he said.

The football icon added pointedly: “In Europe, you can never see things like this.”

Drogba’s comments have resonated widely across the continent, echoing the frustration and disappointment felt by millions of fans, players, and stakeholders following CAF’s decision to award Morocco a 3-0 walkover victory after Senegal’s protest walk-off in the final.

The former Chelsea star’s intervention has further intensified criticism of CAF’s governance, with many arguing that such inconsistent and poorly explained decisions undermine the credibility and global image of African football.

Critics say the episode not only spoils the celebration of what was otherwise a thrilling tournament but also sets a dangerous precedent that could harm the sport’s development and professionalism in Africa.

As pressure continues to build, CAF is yet to provide a detailed public explanation or justification for the reversal, leaving fans and football figures calling for greater transparency, accountability, and consistency in the administration of Africa’s biggest football competition.

Drogba’s outspoken remarks add to the growing chorus of influential voices demanding that CAF revisit and reverse the controversial decision to restore confidence in the tournament.
