“Diddy” Stays in Jail After Being Found Guilty of Some Charges
A judge has decided that Sean “Diddy” Combs, the famous hip-hop star, will stay in jail. This decision comes after a jury found him guilty of moving people to engage in prostitution. However, he was found not guilty of the more serious charges, which included running a criminal group (racketeering) and sex trafficking.
Diddy’s lawyers argued he wouldn’t run away, even saying his private jet was currently in Hawaii. But Judge Arun Subramanian said Diddy’s past violence was a concern and ruled that he must remain locked up until his sentencing later this year. He could face up to 20 years in prison for the charge he was found guilty of.
During the nearly two-month trial in New York City, prosecutors claimed Diddy used his fame and businesses to run a criminal operation that involved sex trafficking women.
After thinking for 13 hours, the jury of 12 people decided Diddy was not guilty of three of the five most serious charges. He will continue to be held in the same federal jail in Brooklyn where he has been since last September.
Diddy’s lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, made a strong plea for the judge to let his client go free. The lawyer said Diddy had even attended a program for people who commit domestic violence to try and change his behavior before he was arrested, and that he hadn’t been violent since 2018. “I just think we should trust him,” Agnifilo said.
However, Diddy’s ex-girlfriend, musician Casandra Ventura, sent a letter to the court warning that the hip-hop star would be dangerous if he was released.
Diddy had admitted to domestic violence, but he said he never forced anyone into sexual acts or ran a big criminal scheme. Judge Subramanian said bail was denied because Diddy’s defense team admitted there was violence in his personal relationships.
There was a lot of emotion in the courtroom when the jury announced Diddy was not guilty of the most serious charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. These charges could have led to a life sentence in prison. When Diddy heard the decision, he got on his knees, put his face in his chair, and seemed to be praying. He was shaking.
The verdict came a day after the jury told the court they had made a decision on the sex trafficking and prostitution charges, but couldn’t agree on the racketeering charge. The jurors said they had very strong, unchanging opinions on both sides about the racketeering charge, which was the most complex charge Diddy faced.
Racketeering, also called “Rico,” is when someone directs an illegal group to commit crimes. To find Diddy guilty of this, prosecutors had to prove he used his trusted team to run a criminal group that did things like sex trafficking, kidnapping, drugging people, and trying to hide evidence. Diddy’s lawyers argued that it wasn’t racketeering if his staff didn’t know they were part of a criminal plan.
During the seven-week trial, prosecutors brought in over 30 witnesses, including Ms. Ventura, rapper Kid Cudi, several former employees, and hotel security workers. They claimed Diddy relied on his employees to pressure his partners into what they called “freak-offs,” where his girlfriends would have sex with a male escort while he watched and filmed.
