Kumasi: Fire Destroys Wooden Structures, Displaces Hundreds in Ahodwo

A fierce fire tore through wooden structures behind the Astonia Lodge Annexe in Ahodwo, Kumasi, on Wednesday night, leaving hundreds of residents displaced. The blaze consumed numerous homes, personal belongings, and container shops, devastating the livelihoods of local traders.

Firefighters from the Kumasi Metro office of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), supported by nearby stations, responded swiftly to the emergency. Their efforts prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings.

How It Happened

DO3 Peter Addai, Public Relations Officer for the GNFS Ashanti Regional Office, reported that the service received a distress call around 9:00 p.m. Due to the fire’s intensity, three additional fire tenders were deployed. The blaze was brought under control by 11:18 p.m. and fully extinguished after midnight. Investigations into the cause are ongoing, with no casualties reported.

Victims’ Plight

Affected residents recounted their losses, with many unable to salvage any possessions due to the fire’s ferocity. One resident, who rushed to the scene after hearing the news, said, “I tried to enter my room to save some items, but neighbors stopped me for safety.”
