Denmark Shifts Africa Focus: Closes Embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso, Expands Presence in Key Regions
In a significant move, Denmark has announced a new Africa strategy, prioritizing partnerships with stable and democratic countries on the continent. As part of this shift, Denmark will close its embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso, citing the severe limitations on action in the Sahel region due to military coups.
Instead, Denmark will establish new embassies in Senegal, Tunisia, and Rwanda, and increase diplomatic staff in Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana. The country will also appoint a special representative for the African Great Lakes and Sahel region.
This strategic move comes as Denmark seeks to strengthen its engagement with Africa, focusing on trade, sustainable development, and renewable energy. The decision also follows recent accusations by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger against Ukraine, alleging sponsorship of terrorism in the Sahel region.
Denmark’s new approach aims to promote more equal partnerships with African countries, recognizing the continent’s growing geopolitical importance. Stay tuned for further updates on Denmark’s Africa strategy and its implications for regional relations.
