Court Jails Two Men for 2023 Obuasi Robbery, Hands Down 40 Years in Prison

The convicts, Francis Oppong, also known as Kwame Abuu, a resident of Kyekyewere, and Francis Nyamekye, popularly called Amearo, were convicted after a full trial.
They were first arraigned before the court on January 30, 2024, facing charges of conspiracy to commit robbery, aiding and abetment of robbery, and robbery, contrary to Sections 23(1), 20(1), and 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
On January 5, 2026, the court, presided over by His Honour Mr Isaac Appeatu Esq., found both men guilty. Francis Oppong was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment with hard labour, while Francis Nyamekye received a 25-year sentence with hard labour.
The two convicts have since been transferred to the Kumasi Central Prison to begin serving their sentences.
The convictions stem from a robbery incident that occurred on December 16, 2023, targeting a small-scale miner at Kyekyewere near Obuasi. Police investigations revealed that the convicts, together with accomplices currently on the run, carefully planned and executed the attack at both the victim’s residence and mining site.
Investigators established that Francis Oppong, who lived in the same community as the victim, monitored the victim’s movements and relayed critical information to the robbery gang. During the attack, the victim was assaulted and sustained injuries.
The assailants escaped with a pump-action gun, a Huawei mobile phone valued at GH¢1,200, 18 pounds of gold worth approximately GH¢100,000, and GH¢2,000 in cash.
Further intelligence-led operations later led to the arrest of Francis Nyamekye at a private hospital in Obuasi, where he was receiving treatment for gunshot wounds sustained during a failed robbery attempt.
Police say efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the remaining accomplices to ensure they are brought to justice.
