Court Grants GH₵200,000 Bail to Woman Accused of Stealing Newborn from Mamprobi Hospital

The District Court of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Accra has granted bail in the sum of GH₵200,000 with two sureties to Latifa Salifu, the 33-year-old woman accused of stealing a four-day-old baby boy from the postnatal ward of Mamprobi Hospital.

The decision came during her second court appearance on March 4, 2026. Latifa faces a charge of child stealing.

Her lawyer, Dr Hamisu Muhammed, urged the court to grant bail, assuring that his client would not interfere with investigations or abscond. The judge had initially been inclined to remand her but granted bail in the absence of the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Ani Adjie.

Latifa was first remanded into custody on Friday, February 20, after her arrest earlier that month. Police moved swiftly following the incident, which was reported on Tuesday, February 17.

According to investigators, Latifa disguised herself as a nurse and took the newborn from his mother, Precious Ankomah, who had delivered the boy on February 14. She told the mother she needed to administer medication, then left the ward with the infant.

She later claimed she had also given birth at the hospital and was discharged early due to poor care. Police checks, however, found no records of her ever being admitted or treated as a patient.

The baby was safely recovered following public assistance and police action shortly after the theft was reported.

Latifa remains on bail pending further hearings. The court will continue to monitor the case closely as investigations proceed.
