Couple Arrested for Selling Their Child in Nigeria

A disturbing case of child trafficking has been uncovered in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, with the arrest of a couple, Christiana Ibanga and her boyfriend, Inyene Akpan.

The pair allegedly sold their own child for a sum of ₦450,000 (approximately GH₵4,300) with the help of an accomplice.

The police were alerted to the situation after a woman reported that Ibanga had lured her six-year-old daughter away to an unknown location.

An investigation was launched, leading to the arrest of Ibanga and Akpan on January 14, 2025, in Abuja.

During questioning, the suspects confessed to selling their child in May 2024. Ibanga also admitted to conspiring with Saviour Aniedi and his wife to steal the complainant’s child, who was later sold to an unidentified buyer in Aba, Abia State.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched a manhunt in Aba to locate the buyer and rescue the stolen child. Although the suspects in Aba remain at large, the police are optimistic about making an arrest soon and are making significant progress in the case.
