Commercial drivers across Ghana have threatened to withdraw their vehicles from the roads from September 21 if the government fails to address concerns over rising operating costs.
In a statement jointly issued by the Alliance of Drivers Ghana and the Progressive Transport Owners’ Association (PROTOA) on September 16, the driver unions called on President John Mahama to intervene in what they described as pressing challenges affecting their operations.
The concerns listed by the transport operators include increased Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) charges, higher penalty fees, alleged police harassment on the roads, rising fuel prices and increases in spare parts prices.
They are also demanding an adjustment in lorry fares, saying the government’s refusal to allow higher fares is putting further pressure on drivers.
The drivers further cited increases in car insurance premiums among the issues requiring urgent attention.
“We, the transport operators wish to inform the general public that we intend to park all our commercial vehicles until further notice if our concerns are not addressed,” the statement said.
“If these issues are not addressed by 21st September 2026, all drivers will park their cars until further notice,” they warned.
The group appealed directly to the President to take action before the deadline.
“We plead with the President to address these concerns as a matter of urgency,” the statement added.
The proposed action, if carried through, could affect commercial transport services across the country and disrupt the movement of passengers and goods.
