Cement Manufacturers Petition Government Over Rising Raw Material Costs

The Cement Manufacturers Association of Ghana has petitioned the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry to urgently review recent increases in Free on Board (FOB) values on key raw materials used in cement production.

In a letter dated April 13, the association raised concerns that the revised FOB values were introduced without sufficient consultation, placing significant financial pressure on local manufacturers.

According to the group, there have been sharp increases in the cost of essential inputs such as clinker and granulated furnace slag—adjustments it says are inconsistent with prevailing global market trends.

The association warned that the new pricing regime could lead to higher duties and taxes on imported raw materials, ultimately driving up production costs and cement prices.

“These increases could have a ripple effect on the construction, housing and infrastructure sectors,” the petition indicated.

The group cautioned that rising cement prices may negatively impact broader economic activity, especially at a time when the country is pushing for infrastructure development and industrial growth.

The petition, signed by Chief Executive Officer George Dawson-Ahmoah, called for immediate engagement between government and industry stakeholders to establish a fair and sustainable pricing framework.

Despite the concerns, the association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ghana’s industrialisation agenda while urging authorities to take swift action to stabilise the sector.
