Carlos Queiroz is reportedly on the verge of extending his tenure as head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars, with negotiations between the Portuguese coach and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said to be at an advanced stage.
According to GhanaSoccerNet, discussions over a new contract have progressed significantly following the settlement of outstanding payments owed to Queiroz and members of his technical team.
The outstanding payments, reportedly linked to their contracts for Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, were said to have been cleared by the GFA with support from the Ministry of Sports.
The settlement has removed a major obstacle in negotiations and paved the way for the 73-year-old coach to continue in charge of the national team.
Queiroz was appointed in April following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March. He initially signed a four-month contract and subsequently guided the Black Stars to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
If the new agreement is finalised, Queiroz will take charge of Ghana’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars are scheduled to open their qualifying campaign against Côte d’Ivoire on September 24, 2026, at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké. Ghana will then host The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 27.
Ghana will be hoping to secure qualification for the 2027 AFCON after missing the previous edition held in Morocco.
