CAF Unveils Details of 2029 African Nations League

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe, has outlined plans for the 2029 African Nations League, describing it as a groundbreaking competition that will feature all 54 African countries.

Speaking on the proposed tournament, Dr Motsepe said the competition is expected to deliver high-profile fixtures between some of the continent’s biggest football rivals, including Ghana vs Nigeria, Egypt vs Morocco, Ivory Coast vs Cameroon, and Kenya vs Tanzania.

According to the CAF President, the African Nations League will be staged in a single host country, with matches scheduled to take place during the FIFA international window, ensuring the availability of Africa’s top players.

“All the best players will come to play. It will be exciting,” Dr Motsepe said, highlighting the quality and competitiveness the tournament is expected to bring.

He explained that the competition will be zonal-based, with countries competing within their respective regions. For instance, West African matches will be hosted by Nigeria, while other zones will also have designated hosts.

At the end of the zonal phase, winners from each zone will advance to compete for the ultimate continental title, with a draw to be conducted to determine fixtures at that stage.

CAF believes the African Nations League will not only deepen rivalries and boost competitiveness but also enhance the global appeal of African football by delivering regular, high-quality international matches across the continent.
