CAF Confirms Major AFCON Changes, Introduces African Nations League

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a major restructuring of its international competitions, with the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set to be held every four years beginning after the 2028 edition.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe made the announcement, explaining that the 2029 AFCON will be brought forward by one year as part of the transition to the new calendar. This adjustment will mark the end of the tournament’s current cycle and align AFCON with a four-year schedule similar to other major continental competitions.
As part of the reforms, CAF will also introduce the first-ever African Nations League, scheduled to commence in 2029. The new competition is expected to provide more regular and competitive matches for national teams across the continent, while enhancing player development, broadcasting value, and overall football standards in Africa.
According to CAF, the changes are aimed at reducing fixture congestion, improving planning for national teams, and strengthening Africa’s position within the global football calendar.
Further details on the format of the African Nations League and the revised AFCON schedule are expected to be released in the coming months.
