CAF Bans Ghana’s Baba Yara Stadium from Hosting International Matches
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has banned Ghana’s Baba Yara Stadium from hosting international matches due to subpar playing field conditions. The stadium’s uneven surfaces, poor drainage, and inadequate grass cover failed to meet CAF’s standards for Category 3 international matches.
According to CAF’s inspection report, the stadium’s playing field has significant deterioration, including:
– Uneven surfaces that pose a risk to player safety
– Poor drainage that causes waterlogging during matches
– Inadequate grass cover that affects the quality of play
CAF’s decision comes after years of warnings to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to address the stadium’s infrastructure issues. The GFA has acknowledged the situation and pledged to collaborate with the government to expedite the necessary upgrades.
Ghana is now forced to seek alternative venues for their upcoming international matches, including the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Neighboring countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Togo are being considered as potential hosts.
CAF has offered its support to Ghana in restoring the Baba Yara Stadium to international standards. The organization will provide an experienced pitch consultant to offer expert guidance on the necessary renovations.
