Burkina Faso Football Federation in Talks with Ghanaian Coach James Kwesi Appiah to Become New Head Coach of the Stallions

The Burkina Faso Football Federation (FBF) has reportedly initiated discussions with veteran Ghanaian coach James Kwesi Appiah regarding the possibility of him taking over as head coach of the senior men’s national team, the Stallions.

Sources close to the federation indicate that preliminary talks have already taken place, though negotiations remain in the early stages. The move comes as Burkina Faso seeks to strengthen its technical bench ahead of key international fixtures, including upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and preparations for future continental competitions.

At 65, Kwesi Appiah brings a wealth of continental and international experience. He is best remembered in Ghana for leading the Black Stars to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil—Ghana’s last appearance at the global showpiece—and steering the team through several Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaigns, including a fourth-place finish in 2015. His tactical discipline, man-management skills, and ability to compete against top African nations have earned him widespread respect across the region.

Appiah is currently in charge of the Sudan national team, where he has delivered impressive results. Under his guidance, Sudan advanced to the knockout stages of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, surpassing expectations in a highly competitive tournament and demonstrating his continued effectiveness at the elite level.

The FBF’s interest in Appiah signals a strategic shift toward experienced, proven leadership capable of instilling a competitive mindset and delivering consistent results. Burkina Faso has long been a strong performer in African football—reaching the AFCON final in 2013 and consistently qualifying for major tournaments—but recent campaigns have highlighted the need for renewed direction and tactical cohesion.

No official confirmation has been issued by either the Burkina Faso Football Federation or Coach Appiah as of February 23, 2026. Discussions are understood to be ongoing, with the federation evaluating options to finalise a new technical team in the coming weeks or months.

Should the appointment materialize, it would mark a significant homecoming of sorts for Appiah in West African football circles and potentially open a new chapter for the Stallions as they aim to challenge for continental honours and push toward World Cup qualification.

Further updates are expected as negotiations progress.
