Burkina Faso Attack: Tomato Traders Targeted, Men Shot Dead on Truck Roof – Association President

The Ministry of the Interior and National Security has confirmed that a truck carrying Ghanaian tomato traders was caught in a terrorist attack in Titao, Burkina Faso, on Saturday, February 14, 2026.

According to Mr Tuffour, President of the Tomato and Onion Truck Drivers Association, the attackers specifically targeted male passengers:

“They shot the male passengers, leaving the female passengers unharmed. All the men who were seated on top of the vehicle were shot dead.”

Mr Tuffour, speaking after receiving reports from survivors and witnesses, said the assailants opened fire on men riding on the roof of the truck, while women inside the cabin were spared. He described the attack as deliberate and selective.

The truck was transporting traders from northern Ghana to markets in Burkina Faso when it came under attack in the volatile Titao area, a known hotspot for jihadist activity.

The government statement described the incident as “disturbing” but has not yet released confirmed details on casualties, survivors or the current status of those involved. Efforts are ongoing to verify the number of deaths and injuries, as well as the safety of all affected Ghanaians.

The attack highlights the severe security risks faced by Ghanaian traders using cross-border routes through northern Burkina Faso, where armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS affiliates continue to target civilians, vehicles and supply chains.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, together with Ghana’s Embassy in Ouagadougou, is coordinating with Burkinabè authorities to provide support to victims and families.

Ghanaian travellers and traders are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution on routes passing through northern Burkina Faso and to follow all security advisories issued by the government.

Further updates are expected as more information is verified.
