“Bui Power Initiative Backs Yam and Groundnut Farmers”

The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has presented more than GH¢442,000 to 160 farmers to venture into commercial agriculture.

“Bui Power Authority Extends Support to Yam and Groundnut Farmers”

Yam and groundnut farmers in Bui, a resettlement community within the Banda District in the Bono Region, have received a boost through a recent initiative by the Bui Power Authority (BPA). This endeavor marks the second phase of the BPA’s Livelihood Enhancement Programme (LEP), initiated in 2019 to enhance the well-being of individuals affected by the construction of the Bui hydroelectric project.

Among the beneficiaries are 815 eligible individuals, with approximately 660 already benefiting from the program’s first and second phases.

During the presentation of financial assistance last Friday, Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, CEO of the BPA, reiterated the authority’s dedication to uplifting the socio-economic status of locals, especially Project Affected Persons (PAPs), to alleviate their challenges. Stressing the profitability of farming in the area, Dzamesi encouraged farmers to remain committed to their agricultural endeavors, assuring continued support from the BPA to sustain and expand their operations.

Challenges

Eric Acheampong, Deputy Director of Human and Natural Resources at the BPA, acknowledged challenges encountered during the implementation of phase one but affirmed the authority’s commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of residents. He outlined the structure of the second phase, which involved categorizing eligible PAPs into standalone or service provider groups and equipping them accordingly to operate independently.

Recognizing the significance of agriculture in the Bui enclave, the BPA established the Agricultural Modernisation Module, also known as the BPA LEP 2 Irrigation Farming Module, to strategically invest in the farming ventures of PAPs.

Commendation

Nana Kwadwo Wuo II, Chief of Bui, commended the BPA for its efforts in improving community welfare and urged further action to address youth unemployment. Groundnut farmer Judith Nsiah appealed for assistance in accessing markets and securing fair prices for produce, while yam farmer Maxwell Gbadagbo, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude for the support and encouraged fellow farmers to invest the funds wisely in their farming activities.
