Broos Laments Lack of Atmosphere at AFCON 2025

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has raised concerns about what he describes as a subdued atmosphere at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), saying the tournament lacks the energy and identity that have defined previous editions.

Speaking after his side’s latest match, the veteran Belgian coach compared the current environment to earlier AFCON tournaments he has experienced, notably those held in Ivory Coast and Gabon. According to Broos, AFCON has traditionally been more than just football, serving as a celebration of African culture, passion and unity.

He noted that in past tournaments, the excitement was evident not only inside stadiums but also on the streets, with fans waving flags, playing music and creating a festival-like atmosphere throughout host cities. That, he said, appears largely missing this time.

“I don’t feel the same vibe like what I felt in Ivory Coast and Gabon,” Broos remarked, stressing that in those countries, the presence of the tournament could be felt at every moment. He recalled how fans would line the streets to cheer teams on their way to training sessions, a sight he says has been absent so far.

Broos explained that such displays of enthusiasm play a significant role in motivating players and enhancing the overall experience of the competition. Without them, he warned, AFCON risks losing part of its unique character.

“There is no typical AFCON vibe here,” he added, expressing disappointment at the lack of visible fan engagement outside match venues.

While his comments may spark debate among fans and organisers, they have reopened discussions about the importance of atmosphere and cultural expression at Africa’s premier football tournament. As AFCON 2025 progresses, many supporters will be hoping that the passion and colour long associated with the competition will still emerge to restore its distinctive spirit.
