Black Stars Stumble in 2026 World Cup Qualifiers with 1-1 Draw Against Chad

Ghana’s Black Stars squandered an opportunity to extend their lead in Group I of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, settling for a frustrating 1-1 draw against Chad on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at the Stade Olympique Maréchal Idriss Déby Itno.
The result halted Ghana’s run of four consecutive wins, leaving them with 16 points but still atop the group.
The match saw Ghana take an early lead in the 12th minute when captain Jordan Ayew converted a precise cross from Mohammed Kudus. Despite the promising start, Otto Addo’s side struggled to maintain control, frequently finding themselves on the defensive against a determined Chadian team.
Missed opportunities proved costly, with Antoine Semenyo squandering a one-on-one chance and Kudus narrowly missing with a curling shot that went inches wide of the top corner.
The Black Stars’ wastefulness was punished in the 90th minute when Chad’s Celestine Ecua capitalized on a defensive lapse, running through midfield and firing a shot that deflected off Caleb Yirenkyi past goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi. The goal marked Chad’s first point in the qualifiers after six straight losses and was their first home match in six years, sparking wild celebrations among local fans.
Coach Otto Addo criticized the “very hard” pitch conditions, which he said hindered Ghana’s ability to play their usual game, while fans on X expressed frustration over the team’s inability to close out the match.
Some posts highlighted Semenyo’s missed chances and questioned the absence of key players like Thomas Partey and Mohammed Salisu, who were rested for the upcoming Mali clash.
Despite the setback, Ghana remains in control of their qualification fate with three matches remaining. A win against Mali on September 8, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium could restore their momentum.
However, a potential victory for Comoros or Mali in their respective matches could narrow Ghana’s lead to a single point, intensifying the race for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The draw has sparked debate about tactical decisions and player selections, with analysts pointing to Ghana’s failure to capitalize on their early dominance. As the Black Stars prepare for Mali, the focus will be on regaining their clinical edge to secure a fifth World Cup appearance.
