Black Queens Triumph Over South Africa in Penalty Shootout to Win WAFCON Bronze

Ghana’s Black Queens clinched the bronze medal at the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca, defeating South Africa 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at Stade Larbi Zaouli. The victory avenged a 2-0 group-stage loss to Banyana Banyana and echoed Ghana’s 2016 bronze medal win over the same opponents.

South Africa took the lead in the 45th minute through Nonhlanhla Mthandi’s right-footed strike, but Ghana equalized in the 68th minute via an own goal by goalkeeper Andile Dlamini, who deflected a blocked header from Alice Kusi. Late chances, including Evelyn Badu hitting the crossbar and a sharp save by Ghana’s Cynthia Konlan from Linda Motlhalo, forced the match to penalties.

Konlan proved decisive, saving shots from Hildah Magaia and Sibulele Holweni, while Alice Kusi, Josephine Bonsu, Jennifer Cudjoe, and Nancy Amoh converted for Ghana, despite Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah’s early miss. South Africa’s Jermaine Seoposenwe and Motlhalo scored, but their team fell short.

Under coach Kim Björkegren, the Black Queens, considered underdogs, showcased their resurgence, while South Africa’s defending champions, led by Desiree Ellis, left without a medal, prompting questions about their squad’s future. The win marked a proud moment for Ghana, with celebrations reflecting restored national pride.
