Black Queens Draw Egypt in Crucial 2026 WAFCON Final Qualifier

Ghana’s Black Queens have been drawn against Egypt in the final qualifying round for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to return to Morocco in March 2026. The two-legged tie, with the first leg in Cairo next month, will determine which team advances to the tournament, which also serves as a gateway to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Queens, who secured bronze at the 2024 WAFCON—their first appearance since 2018—faced a tough path, edging out Mali 4-3 on aggregate in the previous round. Egypt, known as the Cleopatras, advanced after a 3-1 penalty shootout win over Ethiopia following a 1-1 aggregate draw. The winners will join hosts Morocco and other qualifiers in the expanded 16-team format.

Coach Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoopome’s side, fresh off their third-place finish where they defeated South Africa in the playoff, will aim to leverage home support in the return leg at Accra Sports Stadium. The Queens’ recent resurgence, including a 2-0 victory over Mali in the second leg, has boosted morale, but Egypt’s defensive solidity poses a stern test.

The 2026 WAFCON, delayed from 2024 due to scheduling issues, saw Nigeria’s Super Falcons claim their 10th title with a 2-1 win over Morocco. Ghana’s bronze marked a strong return, and qualification could propel them toward World Cup aspirations.
