Black Princesses Coach Sampson Sets Sights on Uganda After Beating South Africa

Ghana’s U-20 women’s national team, the Black Princesses, have qualified for the final round of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers after securing a 3–2 aggregate victory over South Africa.
Priscilla Mensah scored the decisive goal in the return leg, giving Ghana a 1–0 win and sealing progression following a 2–2 draw in the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Upon the team’s arrival back in Accra, head coach Ben Sampson expressed satisfaction with the result but immediately shifted focus to the next challenge.
“[Victory over South Africa] was so important. We want to go to the World Cup, and we knew that after our 2–2 draw in Accra, we had to beat South Africa and then move into the next round of the qualifiers,” he told Joy Sports.
“We have done it, and now we are extremely happy. [The game against Uganda] is a big deal. Our objective is to go to the World Cup. Now we have Uganda as the last hurdle, so we will prepare ourselves and make sure we overcome them as well,” he added.
Ghana will face Uganda in May 2026 for a place at the global showpiece. The Black Princesses are expected to regroup in April to begin preparations for the decisive two-legged tie.
A win would secure Ghana’s eighth consecutive appearance at the U-20 Women’s World Cup, having participated in every edition since their debut in 2010.
The Black Princesses’ campaign continues to draw strong support as they chase another successful qualification for the tournament co-hosted by the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Colombia in 2026.
