Veteran Ghanaian gospel singer Bernice Offei battled dementia for about five years before her death at the age of 63, her former manager, Kwasi Ernest, has revealed.
According to him, the condition progressively affected the singer’s memory and ability to carry out everyday activities, eventually contributing to the circumstances surrounding her disappearance shortly before her death.
Speaking in an interview on Max TV to confirm her passing, Kwasi Ernest said Bernice Offei’s condition had deteriorated to a point where she could become disoriented and struggle to find her way home.
“For four to five years, she had been battling with dementia that affected her brain. When someone is sick of dementia, it affects the daily life of the person,” he explained.
Dementia reportedly contributed to disappearance
Kwasi Ernest said the singer left home when her condition had been triggered, making it difficult for her to locate her residence.
“She left home and the ailment was triggered, so she couldn’t locate her house. After the initial search by the family wasn’t yielding results, they made the search public and they later found her,” he added.
Following her discovery, the family reportedly took her to hospital for medical attention. However, her condition deteriorated and she died on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
Remembered for her faith and discipline
Kwasi Ernest, who managed Bernice Offei during part of her music career, also paid tribute to her character, describing her as a disciplined and God-fearing woman.
He said her faith was reflected not only in the gospel music she produced but also in the way she lived her life.
According to him, Bernice Offei was not simply someone who preached the word of God; she made a conscious effort to practise the values she believed in.
Her death has since prompted tributes from colleagues, fans and admirers who remember her contribution to Ghana’s gospel music industry.
