Benin Coup Plot: Ex-Sports Minister, Businessman Arrested for Alleged Conspiracy

Olivier Boko, Oswald Homeky Face Charges of Corruption, Conspiracy

Cotonou, Benin – Authorities in Benin have arrested two prominent figures, Olivier Boko and Oswald Homeky, on suspicion of plotting a coup against President Patrice Talon’s government.

Olivier Boko, a businessman and longtime friend of President Talon, and Oswald Homeky, a former sports minister, were taken into custody last week. According to Benin’s special prosecutor, Elonm Mario Metonou, they allegedly attempted to enlist the help of Djimon Dieudonne Tevoedjre, the Republican Guard commander, to “carry out a coup by force.”

Homeky was arrested on September 24 while transferring 1.5 billion West African CFA francs ($2.5 million) to Tevoedjre. Boko was arrested separately in Cotonou. Their attorney, Ayodele Ahounou, confirmed that both men have been placed in pre-trial detention at Cotonou prison.

The arrests come amid growing concerns over Benin’s increasing authoritarianism under President Talon’s rule since 2016. The country has seen a crackdown on dissent, including the recent detention of online critic Steve Amoussou.

Boko had recently expressed interest in running for the presidency in 2026, when Talon’s second term ends. Homeky had stepped down as sports minister in 2023 after publicly supporting Boko’s bid.

The charges against Boko and Homeky include corruption of a public official, money laundering, and conspiracy against the state’s authority. Three others are also facing charges in connection with the alleged coup plot.

Benin’s increasing authoritarianism has raised concerns ahead of the 2026 presidential elections. The international community is watching the developments closely.
