Bawumia Calls for Digitalized Road Tolling System to Boost Revenue for Road Development

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has advocated for a broad-based approach to Ghana’s road tolling system, leveraging digitalization to capture more citizens and generate sufficient revenue for road infrastructural development. He emphasized the need for a multipurpose approach, including public-private partnerships, to address the financing gap in road infrastructure development.

Speaking at the 50th Anniversary launch of the Ghana Highway Authority, Bawumia noted that the current road tolling system places an unfair burden on a few citizens. He stressed the importance of digitalization in capturing more people and generating revenue.

The Vice President highlighted the critical role of road transport in facilitating the movement of goods and people, with recent statistics indicating a $12 billion requirement to clear the maintenance backlog of Ghana’s road network.

Bawumia emphasized the government’s commitment to closing the financing gap through innovative solutions and strategic partnerships, prioritizing infrastructure development as a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic strategy.

He underscored the importance of public-private partnerships in securing funding for road development, noting that such collaborations can lead to improved quality of infrastructure and reduced burden on public finances.

The government has taken steps to create an enabling environment for public-private partnerships, including streamlining regulatory processes and offering incentives to attract private investment.
