Bank of Ghana Suspends Proposed 0.75% MoMo-to-Bank Transfer Fee

The Bank of Ghana has directed Mobile Money Fintech Limited to suspend the planned 0.75% fee on direct wallet-to-bank transfers pending further consultations.

The proposed charge, which was expected to take effect on June 1, 2026, had generated widespread public debate over its potential impact on digital transactions, mobile money usage, and financial inclusion.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 26, the central bank said the suspension would allow for broader stakeholder engagement and further review of the proposed charges.

According to the Bank of Ghana:

> “This decision reflects our commitment to ensuring that any changes to charges in the mobile financial services ecosystem are introduced fairly, protect consumers, and support their financial wellbeing.”

The proposed fee had earlier been announced by MTN Ghana and was expected to apply to transfers from Mobile Money wallets into bank accounts.

The central bank, however, did not indicate when consultations would end or whether the proposed charge would eventually be revised, approved, or withdrawn completely.

The development is likely to bring temporary relief to many mobile money users, businesses, and traders who rely heavily on wallet-to-bank transfers for daily financial transactions.
