Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been remanded into police custody for one week over an alleged death threat against the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Ayitey Powers appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, where the court ordered that he be held in police custody for one week.
He is expected to reappear before the court on September 2, 2026, as police investigations into the matter continue.
The former boxer was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command on Monday, August 24, following the circulation of a video on social media in which he is alleged to have threatened the life of Mr Ampofo Ankrah.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged threat are currently being investigated by the Police.
His arrest came after the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) called for his arrest and prosecution over the alleged comments.
Police are expected to conduct further investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the video and determine whether any criminal offence was committed.
Ayitey Powers will remain in police custody pending his next appearance before the court on September 2.
