Farmers at Asonkwaa are appealing for urgent help as their hard-earned farm produce rot away due to the lack of a ready market.
The farmers say they are watching their sweat go to waste as bags of maize sit with no buyers, heaps of yam are left on the ground, and cassava rots in the farms. Vegetables such as cabbage and garden eggs are also going bad.
In an interview with the media, some of the farmers expressed their frustration over the worsening situation.
“We have bags of maize with no buyers. Heaps of yam are left on the ground, cassava is rotting in the farm because no one is buying. Cabbage, garden eggs, and other vegetables are going bad. The price is very bad,” one farmer lamented.
The farmers explained that the combination of low market prices, high transportation costs and the absence of storage facilities has left them in a desperate situation.
They have therefore made a passionate appeal to the government, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Nkoranza South Municipal Assembly and the Member of Parliament to come to their aid.
They called for a ready market for their produce and the fixing of market prices to ensure that farmers receive fair compensation for their labour.
