Asamoah Gyan’s Testimonial ‘Long Overdue’ – Black Stars Manager Hails GFA Honour

Black Stars Team Manager Ameenu Shardow has praised the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) decision to stage a testimonial match for Asamoah Gyan, calling it a “long overdue” tribute to Ghana’s all-time leading scorer and a powerful incentive for future generations.
The GFA confirmed on November 4, 2025, plans to honour Gyan, who retired in 2023 with 51 goals in 109 caps, making him Africa’s top World Cup scorer with six goals across three tournaments (2006, 2010, 2014).
“It’s extremely important,” Shardow told Joy Sports. “Aside from honouring a distinguished personality who gave everything for this nation, it shows we appreciate our heroes. It encourages other players to give their best, knowing they’ll be celebrated.”
He added: “This is long overdue. I’m happy the GFA is taking the lead, not leaving it to private individuals.”
Gyan, who played for Sunderland, Stade Rennais, and Al Ain, has remained active in Black Stars affairs alongside Stephen Appiah. The testimonial, details of which are yet to be announced, will celebrate his legacy as Ghana’s most-capped and highest-scoring player
