Asamoah Gyan Clarifies Ghana–Nigeria Rivalry: “It’s Competition, Not Hatred”

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has dispelled long-standing misconceptions surrounding the fierce football rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria, stressing that the competition is driven by national pride and mutual respect, not animosity.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Gyan explained that the intense rivalry between the two West African powerhouses is rooted in a shared desire to excel rather than hatred.

“Ghana and Nigeria is a good rivalry. It is not hatred or something. We always want to challenge ourselves,” Gyan said during his conversation with former England defender Rio Ferdinand.

He added humor to the discussion by referencing the popular cultural rivalry between the two nations. “They always want to beat us in everything—even with Jollof,” he joked, highlighting the playful debate over which country makes the best Jollof rice.

Gyan noted that while football remains the most visible arena for the rivalry, it extends into culture, music, and everyday banter, making it a defining feature of the relationship between the two nations.

“Despite how competitive it gets, at the end of the day, we love each other. We are very good rivals,” he emphasized.

Ghana and Nigeria are two of Africa’s most successful footballing nations, with a rich history at major tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), World Cup qualifiers, and regional competitions. Their encounters often carry significant implications for continental pride and global qualification.

According to Gyan, the rivalry thrives on competition but is underpinned by mutual admiration and respect, a bond that transcends the pitch.

“Anybody who says we hate each other—that’s not it,” he concluded. “We love each other, but we don’t want the other side to win.”

Gyan’s remarks capture the true spirit of the Ghana-Nigeria rivalry—intense, proud, and competitive, yet grounded in unity and respect
