Arson Shocks Finnish Football: Teens Confess to Torching FC Haka Stadium Stand After Relegation

In a shocking turn of events, three teenagers under 15 have confessed to starting a fire that gutted a historic stand at FC Haka’s Tehtaan Kenttä stadium, just weeks after the storied club’s relegation from Finland’s top-tier Veikkausliiga.

The blaze, which erupted on the evening of December 8, 2025, destroyed the main spectator stand—known as the “Football Factory”—forcing the complete dismantling of the structure and leaving the pitch severely scorched and unusable. Police from the Sisä-Suomi region confirmed the act as deliberate arson, with one minor admitting to igniting an item that sparked the inferno, though none can face criminal charges due to their age.

FC Haka, founded in 1934 and boasting nine league titles and 12 Finnish Cup triumphs, had endured a dismal season, finishing last in Group B with just 17 points—no victories in their final 15 matches—sealing relegation in mid-October. The club, which has competed in four Champions League campaigns and three Europa League seasons, now faces a financial nightmare as repair costs mount, described by chair Marko Laaksonen as “substantial.”

“This is a devastating blow—we didn’t need this after relegation,” Laaksonen told Finnish media, vowing resilience amid community support. The club has launched a fundraising drive to rebuild, with technical director Jukka Kumlander prioritizing pitch restoration for next season’s second-division campaign.

The vandalism has stunned Valkeakoski, a town 150 km north of Helsinki, where Tehtaan Kenttä has been a community fixture since the 1930s. While motives remain unclear—speculation ranges from frustration over the team’s woes to youthful mischief—authorities are probing potential links to the relegation fallout.

Finnish football officials have condemned the act, with Veikkausliiga emphasizing zero tolerance for such destruction. Haka’s European pedigree, including historic runs in continental competitions, adds irony to the club’s double blow of sporting and structural collapse. As investigations wrap up, the focus shifts to recovery, with fans rallying behind their “nine-time champions” in a bid to rise from the ashes.
