Armed Men Demolish Homes at New Ogbojo, Assault Residents in Land Dispute

Residents of New Ogbojo near the America House area are living in fear after a group of about 60 armed men, including alleged land guards and individuals claiming to be national security operatives, stormed the community at dawn on Friday, January 9, 2026, demolishing buildings and assaulting people while asserting ownership of the land.

According to a statement from the community, signed by its leader Jonas Obodai Torto, the assailants arrived around 6:00 a.m. with heavy machinery, including excavators, and began pulling down houses without any court order or lawful authority.

The operation reportedly affected approximately 160 people, including women and children, who were forced to flee as structures were razed. Several residents were beaten, and personal belongings inside homes were damaged or vandalized.

The community accuses the son of the late Evans Teye, described as a real estate owner, of leading the attack. Residents insist the land was legally sold to developers many years ago and that families have lived there peacefully for over 40 years without any prior disturbance.

Mr. Torto emphasized that Ghanaian laws provide clear procedures for land disputes and evictions, condemning the use of force and intimidation as unlawful.

He warned that the continued presence of land guards poses a serious threat to peace and safety, urging the police and other security agencies to intervene immediately to restore calm and protect lives and property.

The statement highlighted that land guard activities have been outlawed in Ghana, and failure by authorities to act could escalate tensions, as residents feel increasingly unsafe in their own homes.

The community remains tense, with families assessing their losses and anxiously awaiting security protection as fears of further attacks persist. Police are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
