AMA Confirms No Trading Will Be Allowed on Kaneshie Footbridge After Rehabilitation

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has made it clear that trading activities will not be permitted on the Kaneshie footbridge once the ongoing rehabilitation works are completed.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Monday, April 6, the Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, confirmed the Assembly’s firm stance on the matter.
“I can assure you that when the bridge is completed, we will not allow traders on it as before,” he stated.
He explained that the Mayor, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has personally engaged with the affected traders and supported their relocation. The AMA has identified alternative spaces for many of them in nearby markets, allowing them to continue their businesses without compromising safety on the bridge.
Mr. Ankrah further noted that the Assembly will maintain a strong security presence to enforce the no-trading regulation.
“Our men will be stationed there to prevent any form of illegal activities in the area, particularly trading on the bridge. This measure is to ensure the safety of pedestrians and uphold public order,” he added.
The Kaneshie footbridge was closed on April 2, 2026, for urgent rehabilitation after inspections revealed serious structural defects, including exposed reinforcements and damaged concrete. The repair works are expected to last several months, with full completion aimed at improving both structural integrity and pedestrian safety.
This decision is part of the AMA’s broader efforts to address infrastructure risks and promote safer public spaces in the capital.
