Albert Amoah’s Brace Powers Kotoko to Dramatic 4-3 Win Over Kwara United in CAF Confederation Cup

Asante Kotoko launched their 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup campaign with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Nigeria’s Kwara United in the first leg of the preliminary round at Accra Sports Stadium, thanks to a brace from Albert Amoah.

Kotoko struck first in the 19th minute through Emmanuel Antwi’s powerful long-range shot, but Kwara United equalized in the 34th minute via Johnmark Atule’s finish. Amoah restored the lead with a stunning strike just before halftime, only for Atule to level again in stoppage time, sending the teams into the break at 2-2.

The second half saw Kotoko regain control, with Joseph Ablorh slotting home in the 52nd minute to make it 3-2. Amoah then converted a penalty in the 68th minute after Patrick Asiedu was fouled in the box, extending the lead to 4-2. Kwara United pulled one back late through Abdulraheem Shola in the 88th minute, setting up a tense finish but falling short.

Kwara United coach Tunde Sanni called Kotoko “a bit luckier” but remains confident for the return leg on September 28 at M.K.O. Abiola International Stadium in Abuja, where away goals could prove crucial. The aggregate winner advances to face Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club in the next round.

Kotoko’s win, despite Kwara’s spirited comeback, gives them a slim edge in this West African derby.
