Founder and leader of the United Party (UP), Alan Kyerematen, says the party was established to unite Ghanaians beyond the longstanding political divide between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on The Point of View on Monday, September 21, Mr Kyerematen said Ghana’s political environment had become highly polarised and required a common national vision that places the broader national interest ahead of partisan considerations.
According to him, the United Party is intended to serve as a political vehicle for bringing Ghanaians together regardless of their ethnic, religious or age differences.
‘We need to unite Ghana’
Mr Kyerematen said he deliberately wanted the party’s identity to communicate a message of national unity and a shared future.
“I wanted a brand that communicates a very important message: that we need to unite Ghana behind one common vision and one common future,” he said.
He argued that Ghana’s development could be constrained if political divisions continued to take precedence over national interests.
“The problem that we have in Ghana is that we are too polarised, we are too divided. A house divided against itself cannot stand,” he stated.
Focus on the ‘Ghana project’
Mr Kyerematen said the party’s objective was to create a unified political front focused on what he described as the “Ghana project”, rather than the interests of individual political parties.
“If only we can bring Ghanaians, regardless of our ethnic background, religious background, age… if we can create a unified front for Ghana, looking at the Ghana project, putting Ghana first, not the interest of individual parties, Ghana will rise again,” he added.
He has separately described the United Party as a centrist political party based on pragmatism and balance, distinguishing its stated political philosophy from the NPP and NDC.
The comments form part of Mr Kyerematen’s explanation of the political philosophy and purpose of the newly established United Party as it seeks to position itself outside Ghana’s traditional two-party political divide.
