United Party leader Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen has acknowledged what he describes as progress made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in stabilising Ghana’s economy, but says the real test will be whether the gains can be sustained over the long term.
Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, September 21, Kyerematen said the government had generally performed well, particularly in efforts to stabilise the macroeconomy.
However, he cautioned against treating improvements in key economic indicators as the final measure of economic success.
“If you ask me about my own assessment of what the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama have done, I would say, generally, they have done well, particularly stabilising the macroeconomy. The question we need to ask is whether they can sustain the progress that has been made.”
According to Kyerematen, achieving economic stability is important, but maintaining those gains over an extended period is a more significant measure of success.
“I think that is a very important material question. Success is good and is very important but the real litmus test of success is when you are able to sustain it. So the question we need to ask can they sustain what they have done?”
Sustainability remains key
Kyerematen argued that short-term improvements in the macroeconomy must be backed by policies and systems capable of preserving stability beyond the immediate period.
He therefore urged attention to whether the current economic gains can be maintained over time, rather than focusing solely on improvements recorded within a relatively short period.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions about the government’s management of Ghana’s economy and whether recent improvements can translate into sustained economic stability.
