Akwamu Royal Family Appeals for Probe into Shooting of Six-Year-Old Boy

The Akwamu Royal Family of Nchiraa in the Bono Region has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and the Inspector-General of Police to intervene in a shooting incident that allegedly killed a six-year-old boy during the town’s Fofie Yam Festival.
The deceased, Agyei Agyapong Gethro, was buried on Friday, 23 October 2026, following the incident on 3 October.
Speaking at a press conference, the acting head of the Akwamu Royal Family, Opanin Paul Kwabena Baffoe, called for a thorough and impartial investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and ensure that anyone found responsible faces the law.
The family also appealed to the Bono Regional Minister, the Wenchi Municipal Chief Executive and the Wenchi Divisional Police Command to intervene and provide answers to the bereaved family and residents of Nchiraa.
It wants the authorities to explain the circumstances that led to the shooting, identify those involved and provide an update on the police investigation.
The royal family expressed concern about recurring misunderstandings and gunfire during the Fofie Yam Festival, questioning why an event meant to unite the community continued to be associated with such incidents.
It urged residents to remain calm while calling on the security agencies to pursue the investigation to its conclusion.
The Assembly Member for the Dwomoo/Nteema Electoral Area, George Nketia, also appealed to the youth of Nchiraa to exercise restraint and allow the police to investigate the incident.
He said anyone found to have been involved would be arrested, reinforcing the royal family’s demand for accountability.
Mr Nketia further cautioned the youth against carrying firearms to public gatherings and community events, warning that such conduct could trigger violence and lead to further loss of life.
