Agona West NPP Demands Release of Constituency Organiser After Alleged ‘Rambo-Style’ Arrest

The New Patriotic Party in Agona West is demanding the immediate release of its Constituency Organiser, David Essendon, popularly known as Sam Toys, following his reported arrest by a joint team of police and National Security operatives.

According to the party, Mr. Essendon was arrested at his residence after allegedly criticising President John Dramani Mahama over the return of intermittent power outages, popularly known as “dumsor.”

Speaking to Adom News, the NPP’s 2024 parliamentary candidate for Agona West, Christopher Arthur, described the arrest as disturbing and politically worrying.

He disclosed that prior to the arrest, Mr. Essendon allegedly received a message from a police officer identified as Detective Inspector Eric Gyan Aboagye of the CID Headquarters Special Investigations Unit.

According to Lawyer Arthur, the message accused the organiser of involvement in a case of “publication of false news” and directed him to report himself or risk the issuance of an arrest warrant.

The party initially suspected the message to be fraudulent due to increasing scam activities in the country. However, Lawyer Arthur claimed security personnel later arrived at Mr. Essendon’s residence in three vehicles and arrested him.

He said the manner of the arrest shocked party supporters and members within the constituency.

Lawyer Arthur further accused the government of attempting to intimidate critics and suppress free expression regarding the country’s ongoing power challenges.

He maintained that citizens should be allowed to openly express concerns about national issues without fear of harassment or arrest.
