African Union Slams Trump’s WHO Exit: A Blow to Global Health Security
The African Union (AU) has strongly criticized former US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO), urging his administration to reconsider.
On Monday, Trump signed an executive order to exit the UN health agency, sparking concerns over funding gaps that could undermine critical global health initiatives.
AU’s Dismay and Its Global Implications
Moussa Faki Mahamat, AU Commission Chairman, voiced deep concern, stating, “The WHO is vital for global public health security, especially during times of crisis.” The withdrawal coincides with Africa’s ongoing battle against severe health challenges, including recent mpox and Marburg virus outbreaks.
Mahamat emphasized the US’s previous support for Africa’s health systems, particularly the Africa CDC, which works closely with the WHO. He expressed hope for a reversal of the decision, highlighting the need for unified global efforts to combat pandemics.
Trump’s Criticism of WHO
Trump justified the move by criticizing WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, alleging inefficiency and bias. While the US had initially withdrawn under his leadership, the decision was later reversed by President Joe Biden.
Health experts warn that such a move endangers global safety. Former US health official Tom Frieden remarked, “This weakens America’s influence, heightens pandemic risks, and jeopardizes public health globally.”
A Pandemic Treaty Without the US
The withdrawal has also impacted ongoing WHO-led negotiations to establish a treaty for managing future pandemics. This critical global effort will now proceed without US involvement.
The decision raises alarms as the world grapples with emerging threats like bird flu, which recently claimed its first human life in the United States, underscoring the urgency of global collaboration in health security.
