African Nation Leads in Digital Identity and Address Systems

Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has highlighted the country’s significant progress in digitalization, citing digital identity and address systems as key pillars. Speaking in Accra, Bawumia emphasized the importance of digital maturity in catching up with developed economies.

Ghana has made notable strides in digital identity through the Ghanacard, with 85% of adults holding the card, making it the leading country in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Ghanacard is linked to the national identity number, integrating with birth and death registries.

Additionally, the government has introduced a digital address system, crucial for creating a digital economy. This system has filled a significant gap, as Ghana previously lacked a functional address system nationwide.

These initiatives have positioned Ghana as a leader in digitalization, with potential economic benefits equivalent to 3-13% of GDP by 2030
