Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has cautioned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain vigilant against what he describes as a likely campaign of misinformation and disinformation by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2028 elections.
In a Facebook post, Mr Afenyo-Markin alleged that the NDC government could resort to what he called “FAKE NEWS” and “manufactured distractions” in an attempt to divert public attention from issues on which he believes the government has failed to deliver.
“Going into the 2028 elections, one strategy the NDC Government is likely to use aggressively, in its desperation to hold on to power, is misinformation and disinformation,” he wrote.
He said the strategy was not new, claiming the NDC had used similar tactics while in opposition.
“Expect FAKE NEWS and manufactured distractions aimed at taking attention away from the important national issues on which the Government has failed to deliver.”
According to the NPP lawmaker, some of the accusations and claims previously promoted by the NDC in opposition have subsequently been contradicted by facts or exposed as misleading.
“This is not new, it is a political tool they have mastered. Go back and examine the accusations, claims and stories they promoted while in opposition. Several have since been contradicted by the FACTS, exposed as misleading or proven entirely false.”
Mr Afenyo-Markin urged Ghanaians to critically assess information ahead of the 2028 polls and avoid being distracted from matters affecting their daily lives.
“Every Ghanaian must understand this strategy. We must stay vigilant, question what we are told and refuse to be distracted from the issues that affect us.”
He said NPP members, officers and communicators in particular had a responsibility to verify information and respond quickly to what he described as false propaganda.
“NPP members, officers and communicators especially carry an even greater responsibility. We must remain alert, disciplined and focused.”
He further urged the party’s communicators to prioritise fact-checking and keep public discourse centred on the government’s performance.
“Check the facts, expose the lies quickly and never allow false propaganda to dictate our agenda.”
Mr Afenyo-Markin said the NPP must continue highlighting what he described as the government’s “broken promises” and the everyday challenges confronting Ghanaians.
He also called on party members to promote the vision of former Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the 2028 elections.
“Above all, stay on message by promoting Dr Bawumia’s vision for Ghana with clarity and conviction while working relentlessly towards victory in 2028.”
He concluded with a rallying message to party members: “Expose the lies. Focus on the issues. Promote the vision. Win 2028.”
