The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has officially confirmed the tournament dates: June 19 to July 18, 2027.
This will be the first time the competition is co-hosted in the CECAFA region, with Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania sharing hosting responsibilities. The announcement marks a historic milestone for East African football and promises to showcase the region’s vibrant football culture on the continental stage.
While the specific venues for the opening match and the final are yet to be announced, the LOC noted that valuable experience was gained from previous events: Tanzania hosted the opening match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), and Kenya hosted the final at the Kasarani Stadium.
Visa Waiver for Fans
In a major boost for tourism and fan engagement, Uganda has announced a groundbreaking visa waiver for all international supporters attending AFCON 2027. The waiver will be in effect from one month before the tournament begins until one month after it concludes.
Dr. Dennis Mugimba, the LOC’s communications director, explained that the initiative is part of a broader government strategy to promote tourism and position Uganda as a premier destination for global visitors.
“This visa waiver will significantly ease travel logistics for fans and further boost excitement and engagement leading up to the tournament,” Dr. Mugimba said.
The move is expected to make it easier for supporters from across Africa and the world to attend the competition without the usual visa hurdles, potentially increasing attendance and economic benefits for the host nations.
Next Steps
The three host countries are currently finalising venue preparations, infrastructure upgrades, and logistical arrangements. The LOC has assured stakeholders that detailed information on match venues, ticketing, and accommodation will be released in due course.
AFCON 2027 is widely anticipated as a landmark edition that will highlight the growth of football in East Africa and provide a platform for emerging talents from across the continent.
