Achimota School Dethrones Presec to Win 2025 Greater Accra Regional NSMQ Championship
In a thrilling showdown on August 2, 2025, Achimota School emerged victorious in the 2025 Greater Accra Regional Championship of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), ending Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School’s (Presec) six-year reign as regional champions.
The final, held at Achimota School, featured five academic powerhouses: Achimota, defending champions Presec, St. Thomas Aquinas SHS, Chemu SHTS, and Accra Academy, all vying for the coveted title in a high-stakes contest marked by intense competition and palpable tension.
Achimota, who won the inaugural regional championship in 2019, reclaimed the title with a commanding performance, finishing with 44 points. Presec secured second place with 41 points, followed by St. Thomas Aquinas with 37, Chemu with 24, and Accra Academy with 23. The contest unfolded across four rounds, showcasing the intellectual prowess of the competing schools:
Round 1: Achimota took an early lead with 23 points, capitalizing on direct and bonus questions. Chemu followed with 18 points, while Presec, Aquinas, and Accra Academy tied at 14 points each.
Round 2 (Speed Race): The fast-paced round saw Achimota and Presec aggressively compete, with Aquinas close behind. Achimota and Presec ended neck-and-neck with 25 points each, Aquinas scored 24, Chemu dropped to 14, and Accra Academy trailed with 13.
Round 3 (True or False): Achimota maintained their lead with 41 points, with Presec close at 38 and Aquinas at 34. Chemu and Accra Academy scored 24 and 23 points, respectively, as the contest became a tight race between Achimota and Presec.
Round 4 (Riddles): Aquinas answered the first riddle, Presec the second, and Achimota clinched the third and fourth, sealing their victory despite a protested question from Presec that was upheld without altering the outcome.
This victory marks Achimota’s second regional title, following their 2019 win, and positions them as strong contenders for the national championship.
Presec, with eight national titles and five consecutive regional wins from 2020 to 2024, faced their first regional defeat since 2019. The NSMQ, organized by Primetime Limited since 1993, promotes science and mathematics education, fostering academic rivalry among Ghana’s senior high schools.
Achimota’s triumph, as a co-educational school with a history of two national titles (1998, 2004), sets the stage for an exciting national campaign.
