National Sports Authority (NSA) Board Chairman Prof. Fred Awaah has raised serious concerns about the condition of the Accra Sports Stadium, describing the facility as a potential “death trap.”
Prof. Awaah made the comments after an inspection of the stadium on Wednesday, August 26, involving NSA officials, representatives of the Ghana Sports Fund and government officials.
He warned that the stadium’s structural condition could pose a serious safety risk, particularly when the facility is filled with large crowds.
“That’s just a death trap. You never know when the entire place will collapse.”
According to Prof. Awaah, if the NSA had the authority and resources to do so, it would have preferred to demolish the existing structure and construct a new stadium rather than continue with repeated renovations.
The Accra Sports Stadium has undergone major rehabilitation works over the years, including renovations in 2007 ahead of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations and again in 2018 ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite these interventions, the latest inspection has renewed concerns about the stadium’s structural integrity and suitability for hosting major sporting events.
The stadium remains one of Ghana’s major sporting facilities and has been approved by CAF to host Category A matches.
The concerns come as Ghana prepares to host the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, while the Black Stars are also expected to begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign in September.
Authorities are therefore expected to urgently assess the facility and undertake the necessary rehabilitation or structural works to protect spectators, players and officials.
