Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has alleged that police officers killed two people and injured 19 others during the violent clash between residents of Gomoa Oguaakrom and New Winneba in the Central Region.
According to the MP, the police used live ammunition when they arrived at the scene of the confrontation, resulting in the deaths and injuries.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, A-Plus alleged that the police response was excessive and demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
“The police came there, shot and injured 19 people, and killed two,” A-Plus alleged.
He further claimed that one of the victims was shot and killed about two kilometres away from the main scene of the confrontation.
According to him, the incident occurred when police officers allegedly encountered the victim and opened fire on him.
A-Plus also challenged the police account that residents from Gomoa Oguaakrom arrived in New Winneba armed with guns.
“The police stated that the Gomoa people came with guns. Where is the evidence?” he questioned, calling on the Police Service to provide evidence to support the claim.
The MP’s comments follow Tuesday’s violent confrontation between residents of Gomoa Oguaakrom and New Winneba, which is reportedly linked to a longstanding dispute over land ownership.
Reports indicate that some residents of Gomoa Oguaakrom entered New Winneba and allegedly attempted to lock up some shops. Residents reportedly resisted the move, leading to a confrontation that later escalated into violence and gunfire.
A-Plus accused the police of using excessive force in responding to the situation and questioned whether law enforcement had acted appropriately.
He also raised concerns about the handling of previous violent incidents, arguing that persons accused of serious offences must be subjected to due process rather than simply being encouraged to pursue peace.
Meanwhile, police reports have put the death toll from the New Winneba violence at three, with between 15 and 17 people injured and receiving treatment at health facilities in Winneba.
The Ghana Police Service has deployed additional personnel to the area, including reinforcement from the National Police Headquarters, while checkpoints and patrols have been intensified to prevent further disturbances.
Several people have also reportedly been arrested in connection with the violence.
A-Plus maintained that the incident must be viewed against the background of the longstanding land dispute between Gomoa Oguaakrom and New Winneba.
He alleged that some individuals had forcibly taken lands belonging to people from Gomoa, contributing to tensions that had been building over several years.
He nevertheless condemned the use of firearms and other weapons, stressing that the land dispute must be resolved through lawful means.
The allegations made by A-Plus regarding police conduct and the circumstances surrounding the deaths have not been independently verified. The police account that three people died and several others were injured remains the officially reported position.
Investigations into the violence are ongoing.
