82-Year-Old Opanyin Adusei Crowned 2025 National Best Farmer; President Mahama Calls for Cheaper Loans

In a celebration of resilience and experience, 82-year-old Opanyin Abraham Kwaku Adusei has been adjudged the 2025 Overall National Best Farmer.
The prestigious award was conferred by President John Dramani Mahama at the 41st National Farmers Day Awards Ceremony held in the Volta Regional capital, Ho. Opanyin Adusei beat out strong competition to take the top prize, followed by Osman Kadiri (1st Runner-up) and 63-year-old Charles Gyato from the Oti Region (2nd Runner-up)
Addressing the Credit Crisis Delivering the keynote address, President Mahama identified high-interest loans as a “prohibitive” barrier to agricultural growth. He argued that the current financial model forces farmers to “work for the banks” rather than for their own expansion.
“We must provide credit at single-digit rates so our farmers can grow to feed Ghana,” the President stressed. “Farmers should not be taking loans only to end up using all their profits to repay the banks.”
Infrastructure and “The Big Push” President Mahama also took the opportunity to highlight the government’s infrastructure drive, noting that the Volta Region has been a significant beneficiary of “The Big Push.” He cited the allocation of road projects in the region as a deliberate effort to improve transportation networks for agrarian communities.
Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, added that government interventions are yielding tangible results, improving food security and lifting household incomes across the country.
