A 30-year-old man, identified only as Dumenya, has been killed following a violent clash between illegal miners (galamseyers) over control of a mining pit at Segemase Government Forest near Kyebi in the Eastern Region.
According to reports, the victim was attacked by a group of illegal miners during a dispute over the galamsey site. He was allegedly thrown into one of the mining pits, where he died.
Details surrounding the exact circumstances of the clash remain unclear, but it is believed to have stemmed from a fierce struggle for control of the gold-rich illegal mining area.
This latest incident adds to the growing list of violent confrontations and fatalities linked to galamsey activities in various parts of the country, where competition over lucrative mining sites frequently escalates into deadly fights.
Authorities, including the Eastern Regional Police Command, are yet to issue an official statement on the killing. It is also not immediately clear whether any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
The development has heightened concerns about the level of lawlessness and insecurity associated with illegal mining operations, especially in forest reserves and protected areas.
