3-Year-Old Girl Fights for Life After Stepmother Allegedly Pours Hot Water on Private Parts in Winneba

A 3-year-old girl is in critical condition at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, suffering severe burns to her private parts after her stepmother allegedly poured hot water on her as punishment for bedwetting.
The child’s mother explained that her daughter had been visiting her father in Winneba from Swedru for the vacation when the incident occurred. Upon picking her up, she noticed the girl struggling to walk and discovered the burns. “She told me her stepmother poured hot water on her for wetting her bed,” the mother shared in an interview with Citi News.
The stepmother, identified as Akaima—a Liberian national—has been accused of inflicting the injuries. Doctors at the hospital confirmed the burns are life-threatening and will require extensive medical intervention.
Child rights organization Challenging Heights has intervened to cover medical costs through its Mother and Child Rescue Unit. In a statement, the group demanded immediate justice and urged the government to bolster child protection agencies, including the Department of Social Welfare, Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), and the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Ghana Police Service.
This heartbreaking case underscores the urgent need for stronger safeguards against child abuse in Ghana.
